Thailand

Developing Opportunity (DO) is proud to announce that we are partnering with 4th Wall Relief International, a US based volunteer group, with projects in Southeast Asia. Continuing our strong tradition of providing education and vocational training to people in developing countries, DO has begun supporting projects in Thai/Burma border area.

Such projects include providing mobile medical clinics, health worker training programs, and donating medical supplies.

Our main focus is to support the Karen refugees who have fled the violence in neighboring Burma (Myanmar). To do this, we are trying to raise money to support the following projects in Thailand:

In addition to providing school supplies and creating classes, we would like to help build more permanent shelters since most of them are living in bamboo huts with tarp roofs. top

Karen Technical Training Program
In cooperation with the Karen Department of Health and Welfare, DO and 4th Wall Relief have begun a series of training programs staffed by volunteers from the US and local Karen community. The 2010 Community Health Worker Training, which begins in April will train 20-30 local health workers to act as first responders in their local villages. The more advanced students and support staff have begun an intensive English training program and will soon undergo IT, office management, and media skills training. These training programs are funded and staffed by DO and 4th Wall Volunteers who, at their own time and expense travel to the border region and work directly with the Karen groups we serve. Without their tireless efforts, none of these programs would be possible. top

Mae Kha Tha Orphanage
This orphanage is located in a very remote area of Thailand right on the Salawin River, Thailand’s border with Burma. The 40 children at this school are in need of remedial math and English education and we are hoping to bring a full time volunteer teacher to the school for a 6 month program.

We are very lucky to have Mr. Rob Swain, a full time volunteer and founder of 4th Wall Relief, supervising these efforts. He lives and works in Mae Sariang, Thailand and is always in need of volunteers for projects both along the border and in the US and Europe.

Thank you for any support you can provide through donations or your time. With your support, we can continue to make a positive impact on the people of Thailand. top
